Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has inaugurated three model secondary schools in Shani Local Government Area, as part of efforts to expand access to quality education and reduce the number of out-of-school children.
The schools are Government Day Secondary School Shani, Government Day Secondary School Borgu, and Government Day Secondary School Gasi. While the Shani school was inaugurated physically, the Borgu and Gasi schools were commissioned virtually.
Governor Zulum said the projects fulfilled his campaign promise to improve educational opportunities, particularly in communities affected by years of insurgency and infrastructural decay.
He directed the Commissioner for Education to increase the supply of computers and tablets to the schools to support digital learning and modern teaching methods.
During the visit, the governor also flagged off the construction of a Higher Islamic College in Shani, the twenty-second of its kind in the state, aimed at integrating Sangaya education with formal schooling.
In another development, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has flagged off the reconstruction of the eighty-year-old Central Primary School in Marama community of Hawul Local Government Area.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony, the governor said the dilapidated school would be upgraded into a two-storey structure with thirty-eight classrooms to enhance learning conditions.
He urged parents and community leaders to ensure school enrolment for children and to support government education policies and programmes.
The governor also inaugurated the construction of a forty-eight-classroom Higher Islamic College in Shafa Ward, which will operate under the accredited curriculum of the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies.
Governor Zulum further announced plans to recruit additional teachers and later visited the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Azare, alongside commissioning other local government projects, including a shopping complex and market stalls.
