Gunmen Ambush Security Operatives in Benue, 16 Feared Dead

By Diafa Doubra,
Tension has gripped Benue State after gunmen laid an ambush on a team of security operatives, leaving at least 16 personnel feared dead, with several others still missing.
The attack reportedly occurred over the weekend in a remote part of the state notorious for violent clashes. Witnesses said the operatives, who were on a routine mission, ran into heavy gunfire from the assailants, sparking a bloody confrontation.
Although authorities are yet to release an official death toll, local sources insist the casualty figure could rise as search and rescue operations continue in the area. The identities of the attackers remain unclear, but security experts believe the assault may be linked to bandit or militia groups that have been terrorizing farming communities in Benue.
State officials have condemned the incident, describing it as a grave assault on national security. They urged residents to remain calm while assuring that reinforcements have been deployed to forestall further attacks.
The tragedy underscores the growing security challenges in Nigeria’s North Central region, where banditry, communal conflicts, and militia activities have continued to claim lives despite government efforts.
