By Diafa Doubra,
Fear gripped residents of Edo State on Tuesday after armed kidnappers abducted at least 10 passengers along the Benin–Sobe–Akure Road in Owan West Local Government Area.
According to reports, the victims were travelling from Sabo-Gidda Ora to Benin City when gunmen ambushed their vehicle, forcing them into a nearby forest. Eyewitnesses said the attackers, suspected to be part of a local kidnapping syndicate, shot sporadically to scare motorists before whisking away the passengers.
Two breastfeeding mothers and the driver were later released, while the abductors reportedly demanded a ₦20 million ransom for the remaining hostages. Negotiations are said to be ongoing between the victims’ families and the kidnappers.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who have called on Governor Monday Okpebholo and security agencies to take urgent action to tackle rising cases of abductions across the state. Travellers have also been advised to avoid the area until security is restored.
A police spokesperson in Edo confirmed that efforts are underway to rescue the victims and arrest those responsible.
