Handcuffing Seun Kuti Is Illegal – Lawyer

By Sola Omoniyi, Lagos
Following afro singer, Seun Kuti’s encounter with a policeman on the Third Mainland Bridge on Saturday 13 May 2023, Barrister Fusika has stated that handcuffing Seun Kuti is illegal.
The lawyer accused the police commission of illegally parading the musician and handcuffing him on Monday.
In a statement signed by Barrister Fasika, he maintained that Seun Kuti is presumed innocent until the contrary is proved by the state.
He added that the decision of the police to subject him to the media parade violates section 9 of the Lagos State Administration of Criminal Justice Law which has prohibited any form of offence in Nigeria and Lagos state.
Barrister Fasika said that the police are expected to enforce the Law, but prefer to disrespect and break it so casually and randomly.
Recall, following the incident on Saturday, Seun Kuti reported himself at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters, Ikeja Lagos.
Seun Kuti was accompanied to the Ikeja Police Station by another lawyer from Falana and Falana Chamber, Mr Femi Akinyemi.
However, Barrister Fasika said that there was no interrogation as the police decided to move Seun Kuti to the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
