The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating what it calls a “state capture” of the judiciary and legislature, warning that the country is drifting toward dictatorship. In a statement released on Monday, HURIWA claimed that recent political appointments, court rulings, and legislative decisions point to an erosion of institutional independence.

The group alleged that key arms of government are increasingly being influenced to serve the interests of the executive, undermining checks and balances. HURIWA urged civil society, the media, and the international community to remain vigilant, stressing that democracy can only thrive when all branches of government operate freely and independently. The Presidency has yet to respond to the allegations.
