The retired archbishop of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, John Onaiyekan has added his voice to the ongoing saga surrounding the outcome of the 2023 general election.

The clergyman stated Thursday, May 4, 2023, during an interview with a Television station that the Nigerian electoral system needs to be revised.

He spoke against the president-elect, Bola Tinubu being sworn in as president before the election tribunal is finished.

Archbishop Onaiyekan said that there are court matters that have not yet been resolved, adding that Nigerians are in an unusual predicament as a result of this.

“I’m still awaiting word from the court regarding the results of the election. People shouldn’t be sworn in while they are still in court, so this doesn’t make much sense. He said.

“I am aware that it has happened with governors, but the results haven’t always been the best. I believe that we need to evaluate our election procedures to produce a victor who will be sworn in and who everyone will support.

“It is unfortunate that the court is taking more time to make a ruling. My issue is that the entire election process has to be properly evaluated to make it simpler for winners to emerge who reflect the desires of the electorate.

“Having a system that is continuously challenged is wrong. We ought to learn why every election is contested.” He added
