The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a notorious armed robbery kingpin, John Samuel, who allegedly shot and robbed businessman Gbenga Obama in broad daylight last month in Ikeja.

Samuel, a 28-year-old ex-convict from Akwa Ibom State, was tracked to his hideout in Epe, where police operatives apprehended him. He is accused of firing at Mr Obama outside his office on Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, on 18 August 2025, before dispossessing him of an expensive gold necklace and other valuables.

CCTV footage of the incident, which went viral on social media, captured the suspect firing an English pistol at the victim, while an accomplice waited on a motorcycle for their escape. Mr Obama, who sustained gunshot injuries, was hospitalised but has since been discharged.

Police investigations revealed that Samuel sold the stolen jewellery for N4 million, a fraction of its actual value. In his confession, the suspect admitted to returning to violent crime shortly after completing a six-year prison term for armed robbery. Authorities described him as “vicious” and linked him to past cases of assassination and murder.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the operatives for their professionalism and bravery in effecting the arrest. He assured Lagos residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend Samuel’s accomplices and dismantle his network.

“The Command reiterates its commitment to the safety and protection of all residents and urges the public to continue with their lawful activities without fear. Lagos has no hiding place for criminals,” CP Jimoh stated.

The suspect is expected to face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
