Lassa Fever Death Toll in Nigeria Rises to 152 in 2025

By Diafa Doubra
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed that a total of 152 people have died from Lassa fever in 2025, as reported in its latest weekly epidemiological update covering July 7 to 13.
According to the report, a total of 859 confirmed cases have been recorded across 28 states and 125 local government areas. The top three affected states remain Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi, which together account for over 68% of the total cases.
Lassa fever, an acute viral hemorrhagic illness transmitted primarily through contact with rodent excreta or body fluids of infected individuals, continues to pose a serious public health challenge in Nigeria. The NCDC has intensified surveillance and community awareness efforts, urging citizens to maintain hygiene and promptly seek medical care when symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and bleeding occur.
Despite improved containment strategies and treatment protocols, the death rate remains high, reflecting the need for early detection and stronger health infrastructure in rural communities.
The NCDC has reassured the public that it is working closely with state health authorities, partners, and healthcare providers to reduce transmission and provide rapid response support where needed.
