LASTMA Official, 2 Others Dead, as Truck Crushes Motorcyclists
By Micheal Chukwuebuka
A devastating accident unfolded on Tuesday morning at the bustling Badagry Roundabout, claiming the lives of three individuals, including an on-duty officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), after a Dangote truck ploughed into a group of commercial motorcyclists.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 9:46 a.m. along the Badagry Expressway.
According to eyewitness accounts, the articulated lorry, which was reportedly heading from Lagos towards the Seme border, lost control as it approached the roundabout.
In a horrifying sequence, the runaway truck slammed into at least two motorcycles waiting at the junction, crushing the riders and the LASTMA official who was stationed at the scene. The three victims were pronounced dead at the location, with their motorcycles left completely mangled by the force of the impact.
Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after the alarm was raised. Personnel from the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) worked alongside LASTMA colleagues to secure the area, manage the resultant traffic congestion, and facilitate the evacuation of the remains.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered and removed from the scene as security operatives cordoned off the area to prevent a secondary accident and ease the gridlock caused by the morning rush-hour tragedy.
At the time of filing this report, the relevant authorities had yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the crash. However, an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances that led to the loss of control and this fatal outcome.
