A Nigerian lawmaker has called for the creation of six new states across the country, a move he believes will help address regional imbalances and bring governance closer to the people. The proposal, presented to the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, has already sparked nationwide debate.

According to the lawmaker, the current 36-state structure no longer reflects Nigeria’s population growth, economic realities, and cultural diversity. The new states, he argued, would promote fairness, improve resource management, and enhance representation. The committee has reportedly begun reviewing the proposal, which, if approved, could mark one of the most significant constitutional changes in recent years.
