Military Alone Cannot End Insecurity in Nigeria

By Diafa Doubra,
A security expert has cautioned that Nigeria cannot rely solely on military action to address the country’s worsening insecurity, stressing the need for a multi-pronged approach that tackles both the root causes and the consequences of violence.
Speaking in Abuja, the expert explained that while the armed forces have played a critical role in combating terrorism, banditry, and insurgency, the challenges go beyond military might. He emphasized that issues such as poverty, unemployment, corruption, and weak governance structures must be addressed to ensure lasting peace.
He further recommended stronger community policing, investment in education, youth empowerment, and dialogue with affected groups as part of the broader strategy. According to him, without holistic reforms, military gains may be short-lived, as new threats could easily emerge.
Analysts agree that a combination of security operations, good governance, and socio-economic development is key to achieving long-term stability in Nigeria.
