Nationwide Blackout Averted as Power Workers Suspend Strike

Nigeria narrowly escaped a nationwide blackout after electricity workers called off their planned strike at the last minute.

The workers, under the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), had threatened to shut down power supply across the country in protest over unresolved disputes with the federal government. Their grievances reportedly include poor welfare, unsafe working conditions, and unmet agreements on sector reforms.

The strike, if it had gone ahead, would have plunged the nation into darkness, crippling industries and worsening economic hardship. However, following an emergency meeting with government representatives, the union announced a suspension of the action to allow more time for dialogue.

While the truce has been welcomed by consumers and businesses, many remain anxious, warning that unless the issues are addressed quickly, the threat of future blackouts still looms.
