NCC Moves to Strengthen Cybersecurity Framework for Telecom Sector

By Diafa Doubra,
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stepped up efforts to protect the country’s digital infrastructure by developing a more robust cybersecurity framework for the telecommunications industry.
According to the Commission, the move is aimed at safeguarding millions of telecom subscribers against rising cases of cybercrime, data breaches, and online fraud that continue to threaten digital platforms and financial transactions. Officials noted that as Nigeria pushes deeper into a digital economy, with increased reliance on mobile money, e-commerce, and online communications, the need for stronger cybersecurity measures has become urgent.
The NCC explained that the new framework will introduce stricter compliance standards for telecom operators, ensure faster response to cyber threats, and promote collaboration with security agencies and global partners in tackling online risks. It will also include awareness campaigns to educate the public on safe internet practices.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely step to boost confidence in Nigeria’s digital space and attract further investment in the telecom sector. Experts also believe the framework could play a major role in protecting national security, given the critical role of telecoms in governance, banking, and everyday life.
The Commission assured that the framework will be implemented in phases, beginning with infrastructure audits and risk assessments across major networks.
