Nigeria Issues Health Alert Over New Mosquito Borne Disease

By Diafa Doubra
Nigerian health authorities have issued a nationwide alert following the global spread of a newly identified mosquito borne illness. The disease, which has already been reported in several countries, is said to cause high fever, severe joint pain, and in some cases, neurological complications. While no confirmed cases have been recorded in Nigeria so far, officials warn that the country’s tropical climate and high mosquito population make it vulnerable to potential outbreaks.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is urging the public to take preventive measures, including using insecticide treated nets, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Health workers across states have been placed on heightened surveillance, with laboratories on standby for rapid testing. The Ministry of Health has also called for calm, assuring citizens that early detection and prompt response remain the best defense against the disease.
