Nigeria Loses Trillions to Maritime Logistics Bottlenecks

Nigeria’s maritime sector is bleeding revenue due to inefficiencies in logistics, with recent findings showing losses amounting to about N2.5 trillion.

According to the Terminal and Transport Providers (TTP), delays in cargo clearance, poor infrastructure at ports, and cumbersome regulatory procedures are major factors crippling the industry. These challenges, experts warn, not only frustrate businesses but also discourage foreign investment and reduce the country’s competitiveness in global trade.

Stakeholders have called for urgent reforms, including the automation of port operations, improved intermodal transport systems, and stricter enforcement of timelines in cargo processing. They argue that fixing these bottlenecks could unlock billions in revenue, create jobs, and ease the pressure on Nigeria’s struggling economy.

The federal government has yet to issue a direct response, but maritime operators insist that immediate action is needed to prevent further economic hemorrhage.
