Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Immediate Past Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), has advocated for the establishment of more universities in Nigeria.

He stated that it would not be wrong if the number of universities in Nigeria increased to 500 in two years.

Prof. Rasheed announced at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja during a brief handover ceremony.

Rasheed said that the Nigerian university system is still meeting the aspirations of Nigerians, highlighting the need to expand access.

He expressed his displeasure with Nigerians criticizing the establishment of more universities, claiming that such insinuations could only come from myopic minds.

“Countries like America, Brazil, and India had thousands of universities serving their tertiary needs and never complained.” Prof. Rasheed said.
