Nigerian Army Condemns Soldier’s Killing of Bus Driver in Ondo, Begins Investigation

By Diafa Doubra,
The Nigerian Army has strongly condemned the actions of one of its soldiers who allegedly shot and killed a commercial bus driver in Ondo State, describing the incident as “unprofessional and unacceptable.”
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Army’s spokesperson, the tragic incident occurred at a checkpoint where the soldier reportedly opened fire during a disagreement with the driver. The Army said the soldier’s behavior grossly violated its Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct governing interactions with civilians.
The military authorities have since initiated a full-scale investigation and promised that disciplinary measures will be taken against the soldier if found guilty. “The Nigerian Army deeply regrets the unfortunate loss of life and assures the public that justice will be served,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the killing has sparked outrage among residents and transport unions in the area, who are calling for justice and adequate compensation for the victim’s family. The Ondo State Police Command has also joined in the investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.
Security analysts have urged the Army to intensify training on human rights and civilian engagement to prevent further incidents of abuse by security personnel.
