A prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend all military cooperation with the United States following reports of US airstrikes in Nigeria.

Sheikh Gumi expressed concern that the US involvement in Nigeria would attract anti-US forces, making the country a theatre of war. He argued that terrorists do not genuinely fight other terrorists, implying that their actions are often driven by ulterior motives and target innocent people.

The cleric also questioned the US motivation for involvement in Nigeria, suggesting that citing the protection of Christians could polarise the nation and infringe on its sovereignty. He proposed that countries like China, Turkey, and Pakistan could provide effective military assistance to Nigeria instead.

Sheikh Gumi emphasised that no nation should allow its land to be a theatre of war or permit its neighbours to be enemies, urging Nigeria to prioritise its sovereignty and stability.
