Nigerian Man Shot Dead by Gunmen in South Africa

By Michael Chukwuebuka,
A Nigerian man identified simply as Chimezie was shot dead by gunmen at a bar in the Durban area of South Africa.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, 9 October 2025, while the victim, who worked as a bartender, was attending to customers.
According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, the assailants stormed the bar, walked directly to where Chimezie was standing, and opened fire on him.
“What we learnt was that Chimezie had just resumed work that evening and was busy attending to customers at the bar when two men walked up to him. They had barely spoken for a minute when one of them opened fire on him. He was shot multiple times, and then they ran out of the bar. During this period, other people in the bar had run for safety,” the source recounted.
Chimezie was found unresponsive and confirmed dead at the scene.
Local authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the motive behind the attack, while investigations are said to be ongoing.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa, where reports of violent attacks and targeted killings have been recorded in recent years.
