Renowned Nigerian musician and live-band leader Akinloye Tofowomo, widely known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away at the age of 50. He died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada.
His family described him as a “revered music icon, grandmaster, and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance,” highlighting his three-decade-long influence on Nigeria’s music scene both as a performer and mentor. They requested privacy during this period of mourning and said details of memorial arrangements would be shared later.
Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga overcame polio, which he contracted at age five, to become a celebrated live-band performer and music entrepreneur. In 1998, he founded Shuga Band, which started performing at Pintos in Ikeja, Lagos, and eventually grew into a 14-member ensemble recognized for its dynamic shows at weddings, corporate events, and official functions.
Through his company, Shuga Entertainment, he set high standards for professionalism in live performance, blending artistry with discipline. Akiin Shuga also served as founder and president of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria, advocating for improved industry standards and fair treatment for musicians.
