Nigerian optometrists are embracing cutting edge technology to improve the quality and accessibility of eye care services across the country. At a recent national conference organized by the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), experts emphasized the urgent need to align professional eye care practices with global technological trends.

Speaking at the event, NOA President Dr. Chimeziri Anderson highlighted how digital tools like tele optometry, automated vision testing, and electronic health records are helping bridge gaps in rural access and reduce diagnosis time. The future of eye care lies in innovation and Nigerian optometrists are ready to lead, he said.

The push toward tech adoption comes at a time when Nigeria is facing rising cases of undiagnosed visual impairment, particularly among children and the elderly. With only a limited number of eye care professionals available to serve a growing population, digital solutions are being seen as vital for expanding reach and efficiency.

Several clinics in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt have already started using AI based screening devices and mobile apps for patient follow ups and referrals. Patients report faster service, better tracking of prescriptions, and reduced waiting times.

Industry stakeholders are urging the government to support this shift through funding, training, and policy updates to ensure widespread adoption. If sustained, the technological wave in optometry could mark a major turning point in Nigeria’s public health landscape.
