The Nigerian passport has climbed to 88th place globally, its highest position in five years, according to the latest Henley Passport Index.

This new ranking means Nigerians can now travel to 46 countries visa-free or with visa-on-arrival, including destinations like Rwanda, Barbados, and Iran.

Officials attribute the improvement to recent reforms by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), including biometric upgrades and better global cooperation.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” said NIS Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap. “We’re rebuilding trust in Nigeria’s travel systems.”

While many Nigerians say top-tier access remains limited, analysts agree the progress shows better prospects for international mobility.

The government says it will continue pushing for more visa agreements, especially across Asia and Latin America, to expand access for Nigerians abroad
