Nigerian Soldiers Cry Out Over Unpaid Allowances, Accuse Military Chiefs of Corruption
By Diafa Doubra,
A group of Nigerian soldiers have written an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, lamenting the non-payment of their allowances and accusing some outgoing senior military officers of corruption and mismanagement.
In the letter obtained by reporters, the soldiers expressed frustration over what they described as unfair treatment within the Nigerian Army, saying they have been receiving only ₦20,000 in “non-regular” allowances instead of the ₦100,000 approved by the government.
“Our families are suffering while we risk our lives daily to protect this country,” the soldiers wrote, appealing to the President to investigate the alleged diversion of funds meant for their welfare.
They also claimed that the welfare of troops on the Frontline has been neglected, with many lacking basic necessities such as food and medical support. According to them, morale within the military ranks has dropped significantly due to poor leadership and unfulfilled promises.
The soldiers warned that if their grievances continue to be ignored, they may be forced to take “unpleasant actions” to demand justice, although they emphasized that they remain loyal to the Nigerian flag.
As of now, the Defence Headquarters has not issued any official response to the allegations. However, the letter has sparked public concern about transparency and accountability within the Nigerian military.
