Nigerians Kick Against Proposed 5% Fuel Tax

By Diafa Doubra,
The Federal Government’s plan to introduce a 5% tax on fuel has sparked outrage among citizens, who argue that the move will worsen the already difficult economic situation.
The proposal, which is part of broader revenue-generation measures, has been met with strong criticism from labour unions, civil society groups, and ordinary Nigerians. Many fear that the tax will push up the cost of transportation, food, and other essential goods, further straining households already battling inflation.
Critics also accused the government of being insensitive to the plight of citizens, pointing out that Nigerians are still struggling with the ripple effects of fuel subsidy removal. Some warned that if implemented, the fuel tax could trigger protests across the country.
Meanwhile, government officials defended the proposal, insisting it is aimed at boosting national revenue and funding infrastructure projects. They assured that the policy is still under review and that stakeholders would be consulted before any final decision is made.
