Nigeria’s Structure Must Change for Real Progress — Middle Belt Forum President

By Diafa Doubra,
The President of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), Dr. Bitrus Porgu, has stressed that Nigeria cannot achieve meaningful development under its current political and constitutional structure.
Speaking in an interview with journalists, Porgu argued that the existing system concentrates too much power at the centre, stifling growth and fostering discontent among the federating units. He maintained that the country’s challenges from insecurity to economic hardship stem largely from a flawed structure that does not allow for true federalism.
According to him, “Nigeria cannot continue with the present structure and expect meaningful development. We need to restructure the country so that every region can control its resources and contribute fairly to the centre.”
Porgu emphasized that restructuring would not only ensure justice and equity but also promote unity and stability across the nation. He urged political leaders to summon the courage to address the issue, warning that continued neglect could further deepen divisions and discontent among Nigerians.
