NiMet Warns of Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Across Nigeria

By Diafa Doubra,
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of thunderstorms and rainfall across many parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday, urging citizens to take precautionary measures.
According to the forecast, northern states including Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, and Kebbi will experience isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall on Monday morning, with flash flooding likely in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe.
In the central region covering Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory, and Benue cloudy skies and intervals of sunshine are expected in the morning, followed by thunderstorms later in the day. Southern states such as Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River will also see cloudy conditions in the morning, turning to moderate rainfall in the afternoon.
NiMet noted that this weather pattern will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the north experiencing intermittent sunshine before thunderstorms, while central and southern states should brace for moderate to heavy downpours, especially in the afternoons.
The agency advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall, farmers to delay applying fertilizers or pesticides to avoid losses, and residents to secure loose objects, unplug electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees during thunderstorms. Airline operators were also urged to obtain airport-specific forecasts to plan flight operations.
NiMet stressed that these precautions are vital to safeguarding lives and property as the rainy season intensifies.
