By Sola Omoniyi, Lagos
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Niger State has demanded that all classes of workers and pensioners in the state receive palliative payments of N50,000.
While opening a one-day workshop hosted by the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees in Minna, the state capital, Comrade Abdulkarim Lafene, the state chairman of the NLC, made the demand.
Comrade Lafene clarified that the demand includes raising the living standards of both temporary and local government council employees.
The NLC Chairman also urged the Niger state government to halt “pay as you earn” until after the minimum wage has been reviewed, the security situation has been improved, and payments have been made for outstanding annual leave grants for groups of workers who are yet to receive them at the state and local government councils, among other organisations.
The NLC also demanded the immediate implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage-based approved minimum pension for all retiree categories, as well as the prompt promotion and annual rise of the staff of state and local government councils.
