THE Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Corina Machado, Venezuela’s leading opposition figure and democracy advocate. Machado’s unwavering dedication to promoting democratic rights and her courageous fight for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela have earned her this prestigious recognition.
In presenting the award, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, praised Machado’s tireless efforts to champion human rights, free elections, and non-violent democratic reform. Despite facing repeated persecution and exclusion from politics for opposing President Nicolás Maduro’s government, Machado remains a powerful voice for democracy in Venezuela.
