Northern Governors Call for State Police to Tackle Insecurity

The Northern States Governors’ Forum has reaffirmed its support for the establishment of state police to tackle the growing security challenges in the region.

The call was made during a joint meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council, held in Kaduna on Monday Chair by the Inuwa Yahaya Gombe state Governor the forum chairman.

The governors, who represent 19 northern states, also expressed their condolences to the governments and people of Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Sokoto, Jigawa, and Kano States following recent killings and abductions of school children and other innocent citizens.

The Forum reaffirmed its support for the establishment of state police, encouraging National and State Assembly Members to expedite action for its actualization.

“A regional Security Trust Fund will be set up, funded with a monthly contribution of One Billion Naira from each state and local government.

The Forum recommended a six-month suspension of mining exploration to address security crises linked to illegal mining.

The Forum commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to secure the release of abducted children and tackle insurgency.

The governors’ move aims to address the security challenges facing the region, including Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings. They emphasized the need for unity and cooperation to overcome these challenges.
