The Kaduna State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state, while tendering an unreserved apology to Channels Television over the assault on one of its cameramen, Mr. Ogbonna Chukwu.

The State Commandant of the Corps, Panam Musa, made the apology when he led a delegation of senior officers on a courtesy visit to the Executive Council of the NUJ, Kaduna State Council.

Chukwu was reportedly rough-handled by some NSCDC personnel while attempting to gain entrance into the venue of the turbaning ceremony of former Vice President Namadi Sambo by the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, in Zaria penultimate Saturday.

The incident, which went viral on social media, drew wide condemnation.

Speaking during the visit, Commandant Musa described the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable, adding that it does not represent the values of the Corps. He said the visit was to apologise to Channels Television and reaffirm the NSCDC’s long-standing partnership with the media.

“I am here for two reasons. First, to appreciate the NUJ for its continuous support to the Corps. Journalists have played a major role in bringing Civil Defence to where we are today,

“Secondly, I am here to tender our unreserved apology to Channels Television for the unruly behaviour of my personnel during the Zaria incident. It was an overzealous act that we do not condone. On behalf of the Corps, I sincerely say we are sorry,” he said.

The Commandant assured that appropriate measures are being taken to address the misconduct and prevent a recurrence.

“We value the media as partners in national development. We want to strengthen our synergy and sustain the cordial relationship that has existed between the Corps and journalists over the years,” he added.

Responding, the NUJ Chairman, Alhaji Abdulgafar Alabelewe, commended the Commandant for taking responsibility and offering a public apology, describing the gesture as rare among uniformed agencies.

According to him, “There are ways to know honourable men, they take responsibility. Your visit and apology are highly commendable.

“We understand the risks our cameramen face on the field, and we appreciate your assurance of better collaboration. The NUJ remains open to working with the NSCDC to promote peace, security, and mutual respect,” Alabelewe said.
