Ogun Government Issues Flood Alert as Oyan Dam Water Release Begins

By Micheal Chukwuebuka
The Ogun State Government has issued a flood alert, warning residents of possible inundation between 20 October and 3 November 2025 due to the controlled release of water from the Oyan Dam.
According to the government, the measure follows heavy rainfall in the northern parts of the country and increased tidal levels, which are expected to cause the Ogun River to overflow its banks.
The areas likely to be affected include Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, Magboro, Makogi, Orimerunmu, Iro, Kajola, and parts of Abeokuta such as Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun, Iberekodo, Akin-Olugbade, and Ago-Odo. Residents in these locations have been urged to remain vigilant and monitor rising water levels throughout the period.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ola Oresanya, advised residents to move to higher ground, avoid riverbanks, and secure their belongings against possible flooding. He also appealed to fish farmers in the affected areas to harvest their stock early to avoid preventable losses.
Dr Oresanya assured the public that the state government remains proactive in mitigating the effects of flooding through continuous dredging of tributaries and collaboration with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority to regulate water flow.
He further urged residents not to panic, noting that the flood levels were expected to subside within days, as the government intensifies efforts to protect lives and property across the state.
