MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Malam Umaru Muhammadu Mai Zabura, a former presidential aspirant under the platform of the defunct All Peoples Liberation Party (APLP), has commended the appointment of veteran broadcaster Ali Mamman Shuwa as the substantive General Manager of Borno Radio Television (BRTV).

Mai Zabura, who once sought Nigeria’s highest office, described the appointment as “a step in the right direction,” adding that Shuwa’s decades of experience in the media industry make him well suited for the role.

“Ali Mamman Shuwa is a thorough professional whose track record in broadcasting speaks for itself,” Mai Zabura said in a congratulatory message on Monday. “This appointment reflects merit, service, and dedication to the growth of public media in Borno State.”

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum approved Shuwa’s elevation last week after years of service as Director of Current Affairs at BRTV. Widely regarded as one of the station’s most experienced hands, Shuwa has more than 30 years of editorial and managerial experience.

A voice from the political class

Mai Zabura, remembered for his brief but spirited presidential run under the now-defunct APLP, has remained an active voice in Borno politics. Known for his outspoken views on governance and development, his support for Shuwa underscores the growing recognition of media as a vital tool in rebuilding communities scarred by insurgency.

“Strong institutions are built on strong leadership,” Mai Zabura noted. “BRTV must remain a platform that informs, educates, and unites the people of Borno, especially in these challenging times.”

Looking ahead

Mai Zabura expressed confidence that Shuwa’s leadership would help reposition BRTV for modern challenges. He urged the new General Manager to embrace reforms, strengthen professionalism, and expand the station’s reach to both urban and rural audiences.

“As technology evolves, so must our institutions,” Mai Zabura said. “BRTV has the capacity not only to inform but also to inspire. I believe Mr. Shuwa’s leadership will keep that mission alive.”

The appointment has drawn commendations from journalists, civil society groups, and political stakeholders across the state, many of whom view it as a recognition of competence and merit in public service.
