Over 600 Suspected Trafficking Victims Flee Myanmar Cybercrime Camp
By Micheal Chukwuebuka
More than 600 people have fled one of Myanmar’s most notorious scam compounds and crossed into Thailand, a Thai provincial official told AFP, following a military raid on the facility.
The sprawling centres, located along the lawless Myanmar–Thailand border, are known to host cybercriminal operations where victims are targeted with romance and business scams.
According to Thai authorities, around 7,000 workers have been repatriated since February as part of a high-profile crackdown. However, an AFP investigation revealed that construction at several compounds has continued, with Starlink internet receivers reportedly installed in large numbers.
Thai officials said the recent escapees would undergo screening to determine whether they were victims of human trafficking or should face prosecution for illegal border crossing.
