There was panic on Tuesday morning when a Kaduna-bound passenger train derailed shortly after departing Abuja, forcing hundreds of commuters to flee for safety.

The incident, which occurred around 11:09 a.m. between Kubwa and Asham stations, left several coaches off track and sparked confusion among passengers. According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), a total of 618 people were safely evacuated from the train, including 583 passengers, 15 crew members, one medical staff, eight cleaners, and 11 catering staff. Fortunately, only seven passengers sustained minor injured and were attended to by medical personnel on site.

Emergency responders, including rescue teams and security operatives, were quickly mobilized. A rescue train was dispatched to move stranded passengers back to Kubwa and Idu stations. The NRC assured the public that safety measures were promptly activated to prevent further casualties.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the derailment. Officials have been gathering evidence, speaking with passengers, and inspecting the damaged coaches to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as passengers jumped out of carriages and ran for their lives. One commuter said, “It was like a nightmare. In seconds, the train shook violently and everyone began screaming and rushing out.”

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani expressed sympathy to those affected and directed state emergency agencies to provide immediate medical and psychological support to victims. Former senator Shehu Sani also weighed in, criticizing negligence and urging authorities to address longstanding safety concerns on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor.

This latest derailment has renewed calls for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s rail system, with many demanding stricter maintenance, improved safety checks, and stronger oversight to restore public trust in rail transport.
