PDP Chieftain Defends Wike’s Expulsion, Says Party Had Reached Breaking Point
By Diafa Doubra, Warri
The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a sharper turn this week after the party announced the expulsion of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, along with several other influential members. Reacting to the development, PDP chieftain Umar Sani said the action was “long overdue,” arguing that the party had tolerated indiscipline for far too long. According to him, Wike’s prolonged defiance and open confrontation with the party’s leadership had created a toxic atmosphere that made meaningful reconciliation nearly impossible.
Sani revealed that the Ambassador Hassan Adamu Committee, set up to unify warring factions, made several attempts to stabilize the situation but failed due to what he described as “unreasonable demands.” One of the major sticking points, he explained, was Wike’s insistence that the PDP should not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 election, a request the party considered both unacceptable and damaging to its political future. He noted that such conditions clearly signaled that some members were no longer aligned with the core values and goals of the party.
The PDP stalwart emphasized that while expulsion is often regarded as a last resort, the party had exhausted every avenue for internal resolution. In his view, removing individuals who were undermining the party’s cohesion was necessary to restore order, rebuild trust, and reposition the PDP ahead of upcoming elections. He added that allowing the situation to drag on would have deepened internal fractures and weakened the party’s credibility among Nigerians.
