The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating living conditions, saying that more people are dying in the country than in nations currently at war.

Speaking in a statement on Monday, Obi lamented that widespread poverty, hunger, insecurity, and the collapse of essential services have made life unbearable for millions of Nigerians. He noted that despite the country not being officially at war, daily deaths caused by bandit attacks, hunger, road accidents, and poor healthcare now outnumber fatalities recorded in conflict zones.

Obi urged the Federal Government to prioritize the protection of lives and the improvement of citizens’ welfare instead of engaging in propaganda about economic growth. According to him, “A nation cannot claim progress when its people are dying in avoidable circumstances.”

The former Anambra governor also called on leaders at all levels to show empathy and take urgent action to address the worsening hunger, insecurity, and unemployment ravaging the country.

He concluded by saying that until Nigerians begin to value human life and uphold justice, equity, and good governance, true development will remain elusive.
