The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday led a high-powered delegation of senators to the Abuja residence of the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, to commiserate with him over the tragic death of his son and grandson.

The late Victor Moro, the Senator’s son, had recently returned to Nigeria after completing his studies at a Turkish university and was awaiting deployment for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. He reportedly died in an auto crash at Asokoro, Abuja, on Friday, while his grandson, Abba Moro Jr., passed away the following day.

Speaking during the visit, Senate President Akpabio said the news of the tragedy deeply saddened the entire Senate, prompting them to suspend part of their day’s business to pay the condolence visit.

“When we heard of this unfortunate incident, we decided to abridge the day’s business to come and sympathise with our colleague and his family. An injury to one is an injury to all,” Akpabio said.

Recalling a conversation he had with Senator Moro, Akpabio explained that the late Victor died in a car accident after attempting to avoid a herd of cows that suddenly strayed onto the road. “From the narration when I phoned you, you informed me that the boy died in Asokoro on his way to the barracks to register at a gym. Some cows entered the road, and while trying to dodge them, his car collided with another vehicle from the opposite direction. He died on the spot,” Akpabio recounted.

The Senate President expressed concern over the recurring dangers caused by uncontrolled cattle movement on Nigerian roads, stressing that the Senate has been working towards more effective livestock regulation.

“The circumstances of his death are part of the issues we grapple with daily in the Senate — how to make our society safer and better regulated. Mr President recently visited Brazil to sign Memoranda of Understanding aimed at promoting livestock ranching. We hope such tragedies will soon become a thing of the past,” he added.

Akpabio encouraged Senator Moro and his family to take solace in their faith, describing the deaths as “a painful reminder that life belongs to God.”

“For us as a Senate, your loss is our loss. You are a stabilising factor and a respected leader in the Senate. On behalf of the 10th Senate and our colleagues in the House of Representatives, we say please accept our deepest condolences,” Akpabio stated.

In his response, Senator Abba Moro thanked his colleagues for their solidarity and comforting words, describing their visit as a source of strength during a moment of deep sorrow.

“If it is not God, why will a son die on Friday and another son die on Saturday? Your visit and your words of encouragement have strengthened my resolve to continue contributing to the Senate and to our country,” Moro said.

The visit by the Senate delegation highlighted the unity and shared compassion within the National Assembly, even in moments of personal tragedy.
