Phyna Loses Sister After Truck Accident, Dangote Group Reacts

By Diafa Doubra,
Tragedy has struck the family of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, following the death of her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a truck accident.
According to a statement issued by the family’s lawyers, Ruth died on August 31, 2025, at about 6:30 a.m. Her death came just weeks after a horrific accident on August 13, when she was hit by a truck belonging to the Dangote Group near Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, barely six days after her graduation. The impact left her with severe leg injuries that required amputation, but her condition later deteriorated, leading to her death.
The Otabor family has asked for privacy as they mourn their daughter’s untimely passing. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due time.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Dangote Group expressed sadness over Ruth’s death, noting that the company had been providing financial and medical support since the accident. The group added that plans were in place to fly Ruth abroad for further treatment before her condition worsened. It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the family through this difficult period.
The heartbreaking news has drawn widespread sympathy, with celebrities and fans sending condolences to Phyna and her family. Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw prayed for God’s comfort, while fellow BBNaija star Wanni described Ruth’s ordeal as deeply painful and wished her soul eternal rest.
Ruth’s passing has sparked conversations about road safety and the dangers posed by heavy-duty trucks around populated areas, with many Nigerians calling for stronger regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
