The Delta State Police Command has recorded fresh breakthroughs in its ongoing crackdown on illicit drug trafficking, with the arrest of a suspected drug dealer and the interception of 21 bags of substances believed to be Indian hemp in separate operations across the state.

The operations, conducted through intelligence-led policing, were carried out under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, as part of sustained efforts to combat drug-related crimes and enhance public safety.

In one of the operations, which took place on April 8, 2026, operatives of the Ugborikoko Division intercepted a tricyclist along Airport Road in Effurun during routine traffic duties. The suspect, identified as Evans Emmanuel Akpowene, reportedly drew the attention of officers due to suspicious behaviour.

A subsequent search of the tricycle, prompted by a strong odour, led to the discovery of a significant quantity of substances suspected to be illicit drugs, including Indian hemp, Canada Loud, Colorado, and Monkey Tail. The suspect, along with the recovered exhibits and the tricycle bearing registration number EFR 173 VD, is currently in police custody as investigations continue.

In a separate operation on April 2, 2026, operatives of the Dragon Patrol Team intercepted a gold-coloured Sienna bus along the Ozoro/Kwale Road near Ebendo Community in Ndokwa West Local Government Area. The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled into the bush upon sighting the police.

A search of the abandoned vehicle resulted in the recovery of 21 bags of substances suspected to be Indian hemp. The vehicle and exhibits have since been secured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

Commending the vigilance and professionalism of the operatives, Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for drug-related offences. He warned against involvement in illicit drug activities, particularly among youths, and urged residents to continue providing credible information to support ongoing law enforcement efforts.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining the momentum in the fight against drug trafficking and related crimes across Delta State.
