Security authorities in Imo and Plateau states have announced an immediate ban on the sale and use of firecrackers as the Christmas season approaches. The police commands said the decision became necessary due to the rising misuse of fireworks by criminals who exploit the noise to mask gunshots and other illegal activities. The ban, they added, is aimed at preventing panic and maintaining order during the festive period.

According to the police, officers have been deployed to enforce the directive across major markets, neighborhoods, and public gatherings. Traders dealing in fireworks have been warned to comply immediately or risk arrest and confiscation of their goods. The police also emphasized that many firecrackers pose serious safety hazards, especially in crowded areas where careless use could result in fires or injuries.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with the new regulation as part of broader efforts to strengthen security. The police commands reassured the public that the measure is temporary and intended solely to ensure a peaceful and incident-free holiday season. They also encouraged community members to promptly report anyone found violating the ban.
