Police Launch Flood Safety Campaign Amid Rising Water Levels

By: Adamu Aliyu Ngulde, Maiduguri
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Police in Borno State are warning residents to take extra precautions as water levels rise, launching a community sensitization drive aimed at reducing flood-related accidents and deaths.
The campaign, held at the River Gadabul axis along Damboa Road-Maduganari in Maiduguri, gathered community leaders, boat operators and residents living near waterways. Officers urged participants to adopt safety practices, including the consistent use of life jackets and buoys.
“The goal is to prevent avoidable mishaps,” officials said, citing recent cases of drowning across the state.
The initiative follows a directive from the state Commissioner of Police and is part of broader efforts to prepare communities for seasonal flooding.
Police also encouraged the public to report emergencies quickly using the Command’s hotlines: 0802 347 3293 and 0806 807 5581.
Authorities say the campaign underscores their commitment to protecting lives and property as Borno confronts both natural and man-made crises.
