Four people were injured and a suspected knifeman was shot by police following a car-ramming and stabbing incident outside a synagogue in Manchester on Thursday morning, officials have confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) declared a “major incident” shortly after 9:30am local time, after officers were called to report of an attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in the Crumpsall area of the city.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and are attending to members of the public,” a police spokesperson said, confirming that “four members of the public sustained injuries caused by both the vehicle and stab wounds.”

According to GMP, “shots were fired by firearms officers at 9:38am. One man has been shot, believed to be the offender.”

The attack occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, and just days before the second anniversary of the 7 October 2023 attacks on Israel.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was “appalled by the attack,” and a government official confirmed that he would cut short his trip to Denmark, where he had been holding talks with the European Union.
