Nigeria’s civil rights community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of renowned activist and labour leader, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Lagos on Sunday night.
According to eyewitnesses, Aremu was struck by a speeding vehicle along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while returning from a social event. The driver reportedly fled the scene, leaving the activist unconscious on the roadside. He was later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital before medical help could reach him.
Aremu, a long-standing coordinator of the United Action for Democracy (UAD) and a prominent voice in the pro-democracy movement, was widely respected for his fearless activism during Nigeria’s military era. Colleagues and allies have described his death as a “monumental loss” to the struggle for social justice, human rights, and good governance in the country.
In a statement, labour unions and civil society organizations called on the Lagos State Police Command to swiftly investigate the incident and bring the driver to justice. Tributes have continued to pour in from across the country, celebrating Aremu’s legacy as a tireless defender of the oppressed and a man who devoted his life to the cause of freedom.
