Vince Zampella, the renowned video game developer and co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise, has died following a fatal single-vehicle crash in Los Angeles. He was 55.

The accident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Sunday along a scenic roadway in the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles. Authorities said the southbound vehicle, a Ferrari, veered off the road and struck a concrete barrier, resulting in a violent crash.

A passenger was ejected from the vehicle, while Zampella became trapped inside as the car caught fire.

Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene. Zampella was pronounced dead at the location, while the passenger later died at a hospital.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Zampella was a highly influential figure in modern gaming. He co-created Call of Duty alongside Jason West in 2003 at Infinity Ward and later co-founded Respawn Entertainment, which developed critically acclaimed titles such as Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series.

“Vince’s influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching,” Electronic Arts said in a statement. “His work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers worldwide”.
