Rivers Governorship Polls: Wike Moves to Regain Political Stronghold as Fubara’s Camp Left in Uncertainty

By Diafa Doubra,
The build up to the forthcoming governorship election in Rivers State has taken a dramatic turn, as loyalists of Governor Siminalayi Fubara appear unsettled by the growing influence of former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Reports suggest that Wike, who remains a key power broker in the state, is quietly working to re-establish his dominance over the political structure ahead of 2027, with the aim of consolidating support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
While Fubara’s allies have expressed concern over being sidelined in the unfolding power play, Wike’s camp has continued to strengthen its hold through renewed grassroots mobilization and alignment with the presidency.
Observers note that the tussle for control of Rivers politics may deepen internal divisions within the ruling party in the state, setting the stage for what could become one of the most decisive political battles in the South-South ahead of the next general elections.
