Sowore Criticizes Peter Obi for Steering Clear of #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest

By Diafa Doubra,
Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has taken a swipe at Labour Party’s Peter Obi, accusing him of deliberately avoiding the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest to protect his political image.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday, Sowore alleged that Obi and his team were distancing themselves from the campaign out of fear that his involvement might “steal the spotlight.” He described such avoidance as hypocritical, arguing that genuine leaders should be willing to stand up for justice regardless of personal or political consequences.
According to Sowore, the call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not just a regional concern but a national one that reflects broader issues of fairness and the rule of law in Nigeria. He emphasized that it was “unfortunate” for politicians who claim to stand for justice to shy away from critical human rights causes.
“The struggle to free Nnamdi Kanu is not about ego or popularity—it’s about justice and consistency,” Sowore said. “If you say you believe in democracy, then you must also believe in the right to fair trial and freedom of expression.”
The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, which has gained attention across several cities, is demanding the immediate release of Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021 despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
