MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — The Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, has praised Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for what he described as a “thoughtful and strategic choice” in appointing veteran broadcaster Ali Mamman Shuwa as the new General Manager of Borno Radio Television Corporation (BRTV).

Lawan made the remarks when Shuwa, accompanied by senior management staff of the corporation, presented his official appointment letter to the Speaker at the Legislative Guest House in Old GRA, Maiduguri.

The Speaker said the appointment reflects Governor Zulum’s vision of repositioning state-owned media as an institution of integrity, professionalism, and service to the people. He described Shuwa as a household name in the state’s broadcast industry, having served in various editorial and managerial capacities for over three decades.

“Ali Mamman Shuwa is not only a broadcaster; he is an institution who has trained, mentored, and inspired a generation of journalists in Borno State and beyond,” Lawan said “His appointment is well deserved, and it demonstrates the governor’s commitment to excellence in public communication.”

The Speaker further assured that the House of Assembly will continue to partner with BRTV in its role as a watchdog, educator, and promoter of civic awareness. He emphasized that in an era where misinformation spreads quickly, the credibility of state media becomes even more vital.

Responding, the new General Manager expressed gratitude to Governor Zulum for entrusting him with the leadership of the corporation. Shuwa pledged to restore public confidence in the station and reposition BRTV as a leading voice for information, culture, and development in Borno State.

“We are entering a new chapter for BRTV,” Shuwa said. “Our focus will be on professionalism, accuracy, and balance in news reporting, as well as promoting the cultural heritage of our people. We will strengthen collaboration with the Assembly and all government agencies to ensure that the public is well-informed.”

He also thanked the Speaker for the warm reception and promised to sustain the cordial relationship between the legislature and the broadcaster.

Shuwa, who joined BRTV as a young reporter in the early 1990s, rose through the ranks to become Director of Current Affairs before his appointment. Colleagues describe him as a disciplined manager, a meticulous editor, and a mentor whose career has shaped the trajectory of journalism in the region.

As the state-owned broadcaster faces challenges ranging from outdated equipment to the growing influence of digital platforms, observers say Shuwa’s experience and leadership will be tested. But for now, his appointment has drawn wide commendation, with lawmakers, media professionals, and civil society leaders expressing optimism about the future of the station.
