Tension Brews as Tinubu–El-Rufai Rift Sparks Debate Over Power and Respect in Nigerian Politics

By Diafa Doubra,
The rift between President Bola Tinubu and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has continued to stir heated debate, with analysts interpreting their strained relationship through the lens of culture, politics, and power. A recent commentary, rich with Yoruba proverbs, suggests that Tinubu’s perceived slight against El-Rufai may have gone beyond mere political disagreement, touching on deep issues of respect and influence.
According to the piece, El-Rufai, known for his boldness and sharp tongue, may feel undermined by Tinubu’s style of governance and political maneuvering. Observers argue that in Nigeria’s delicate political landscape, where personal ego often collides with collective interest, the two men’s fallout could reshape alliances ahead of 2027.
The commentary likened the situation to Yoruba wisdom about “alaroka” one who provokes conflict unnecessarily warning that if reconciliation is not sought, the rivalry could further polarize the ruling class. It also drew attention to the role of northern political heavyweights, who may use El-Rufai’s growing discontent as leverage against Tinubu.
While both men have remained largely silent in public, the undercurrent of tension has become a subject of speculation, with many Nigerians wondering whether their differences will deepen into open confrontation or be quietly resolved in the corridors of power.
For now, what seems clear is that the Tinubu–El-Rufai divide is not just a personal clash, but a reflection of the broader struggle for dominance within Nigeria’s political elite.
