Tinubu Cancels U.S. Visit, Heads to South Africa for G-20 Summit and Meeting with Trump
By Diafa Doubra,
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly cancelled his planned trip to the United States and will instead attend the upcoming G-20 Summit scheduled to hold later this month in Durban, South Africa.
According to reports, Tinubu’s change of plans comes amid ongoing diplomatic discussions surrounding Nigeria’s relations with the U.S. and recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump about security issues in Nigeria.
Sources within the presidency disclosed that the Nigerian leader is expected to meet with Trump on the sidelines of the G-20 meeting to discuss regional stability, investment, and counterterrorism strategies.
The development has sparked public curiosity, especially as the proposed U.S. trip was initially seen as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties and attract economic partnerships.
Tinubu’s attendance at the South African summit is expected to focus on fostering economic cooperation among African and global leaders, while also addressing key issues such as security, trade, and sustainable development.
