Trucks Collision In Lagos Leaves One in Critical Condition
By Micheal Chukwuebuka
A collision involving two heavy-duty vehicles near the Otedola Bridge, along the Berger–Ojodu corridor in Lagos, on Wednesday, left one of the drivers in critical condition.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), swiftly launched a rescue operation after a 14-tyre Scania truck loaded with wheat collided with a 6-tyre Iveco mini-truck carrying cartons of Gala sausage rolls.
The crash reportedly occurred as both drivers struggled for the right of way.
In a statement issued by LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of the agency’s Incident Management and Enforcement Unit, Akeem Adeoshun, confirmed that the Scania driver sustained serious injuries to his head and legs.
The victim was rescued from the wreckage with the assistance of officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police, and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Due to the severity of the crash, traffic officials temporarily closed the inward Berger section of the expressway to allow for the removal of the damaged vehicles and the transloading of goods. Normal traffic flow was later restored after the operation.
Describing the crash as “an avoidable tragedy,” LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, blamed it on recklessness and unhealthy competition among truck drivers.
He praised the prompt response and professionalism of the rescue team, while wishing the injured driver a swift recovery. Bakare-Oki also urged motorists to exercise patience and discipline on Lagos roads, stressing that adherence to traffic regulations is vital for safety.
Wednesday’s incident comes barely two weeks after another fatal crash at Obadore, inward Igando, along the LASU-Igando Road, where one person died and several others sustained injuries. That accident involved a commercial Mazda bus and a broken-down Private Sector Participant (PSP) compactor truck abandoned on the road.
